Wellness Policy

Balance is essential for any Wellness Policy. Key areas include:

  • Nutrition Education
  • Physical activity
  • Other school-based activities that are designed to promote student wellness
  • District Goals for Health and Wellness
  • Competitive Foods and Beverages
  • Nutrition Promotion
  • Physical Education
  • District Wellness Committee/Coordinated School Health Advisory Council
  • Record Keeping
  • Food and Beverage Marketing

The Richland School District One has been a leader in the state and the community in regard to the wellness of our students. Richland One was one of the first school districts in the State of South Carolina to establish the Coordinated School Health Advisory Council (CSHAC). This council is responsible for assessing, implementing and monitoring the district's schools health policies and programs.

The Richland One Nutrition Services department has established its own Wellness Committee and Wellness Policy, "A Healthy and Nutritious School Environment" to establish nutrition guidelines for all foods and beverages available on the campus during the 'school day' that are consistent with federal regulations. This includes:

  • School meal nutrition standards, and the
  • Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards
  • Nutrition promotion
  • Nutrition education

The Nutrition Services Wellness Committee is a subcommittee of CSHAC. This committee is a shared leadership with CSHAC and the SNS department.

The Nutrition Services Wellness Committee includes but is not limited to the Richland One Nutrition Services Director, CSHAC Chairman,  Nutrition Services Registered Dietitian, parents of students, physicians, school nurses, health teachers, school board members, PE teachers, community members and nutrition and fitness experts.

The Nutrition Services Wellness Committee continually reviews and updates the Wellness Policy. During the past year the committee has reviewed and updated the current policy.
