What is a Student Meal?
We participate in Offer vs. Serve at both breakfast and lunch. That means we offer all the components that are needed, and the student can take or decline as they wish. At breakfast, we offer four components of which the student must choose a minimum of three. We offer a variety of bread/grain, fruit, and milk components. Menu items may account for one or two components. At lunch, we offer five components of which the student must choose a minimum of three, but can take up to 5, and one component MUST be a fruit or veggie. Lunch components include: Meat/Meat Alternative, Bread/Grain, Fruit, Vegetable, and Milk. Once again, menu items may include more than one component: for example, a cheeseburger is both the meat/meat alternative and the grain. To purchase a reimbursable breakfast or lunch, one of the components chosen MUST be a fruit or vegetable.
How Healthy is school Lunch?
The answer to this is....very healthy!!
In 2010, the "Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act" was released that applies to the National School Breakfast (NSBP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). All meals (breakfast and lunch) are based on a meal pattern. Each meal, depending on age group, must contain a certain number of calories, fat, sodium, fruit, veggies, grains, meats/meat alternatives (alternates include items such as cheese and yogurts), and milk. Veggies from different subgroups (Red/Orange, Dark Green, Bean/Pea, Starchy, Other) must be served in certain amounts weekly. All juice served must be 100% fruit juice with no added sugar. All plain milk served is 1% white and fat-free flavored (chocolate or strawberry). All grain products are whole grain rich, which means all grains offered need to contain 51% or more whole grain. All items served are oven baked. We do not fry anything.
A La Carte Purchases
We sell a variety of a la carte items in all of our cafeterias. All items sold follow the Smart Snack guideline laws as of 2014, which are as follows:
- Must be a whole grain rich product.
- <35% of total calories can come from fat and contain zero trans fat
- <200mg of sodium per packaged item
- Beverages: Elementary: 8fl. oz max (except bottled water) for 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice (plain or carbonated), 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice Diluted w/water (plain or carbonated), Middle: 12fl oz. max (except bottled water) for 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice (plain or carbonated), 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice Diluted w/water (plain or carbonated), High: 12fl oz. max (except bottled water) for 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice (plain or carbonated), 100% Fruit or Vegetable Juice Diluted w/water (plain or carbonated) and Low Calorie Beverages, Flavored and/or Carbonated (≤40 calories per 8oz, or ≤60 calories per 120z.), and up to 20oz for No Calorie Beverages, flavored and/or carbonated (<5 calories per 8oz, or ≤10 calories per 20oz)
If there is money in your child's meal account, they can purchase a la carte snacks/beverages. If you want restrictions set or no a la carte purchases, please send a note or email with your restrictions and a notation will be applied to the meal account, or you can set those restrictions on www.mypaymentsplus.com
A la carte items are not allowed to be charged to a meal account. There must be money on the meal account to cover the cost of the item, or the student must have cash in hand. A list of our a la carte items can be viewed here: 21-22 Meal & A la Carte Price List
Students from Cool Spring Primary, going into 3rd grade at Acquinton Elementary, are in for a new a la carte purchasing experience. At AES, a la carte items are sold EVERY day. Parents, to keep you informed of this change, a letter is sent home at the beginning of each school year. Again, if there is money in your child's meal account, they are permitted to purchase a la carte snack/beverages. If you wish to set a la carte purchasing restrictions, please do so at www.mypaymentsplus.com, or send a note or email with your restrictions and a notation will be applied to the meal account.
