Welcome to Child Nutrition!
Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand! The Child Nutrition department is made up of a dedicated team of food and nutrition professionals that are focused on our students' health and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and education.
Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.
Free Breakfast & Lunch Meals for the 2021-2022 School Year:
In response to the financial hardship felt nationwide and as a result of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an extension to its free meals program for all students for the 2021-2022 school year through the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). Lakota will be participating in SSO, which allows all students to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch daily at no cost. The program is being offered at no cost to the district.
No application is required to receive the district wide free meals for the 2021-2022 school year, however even though there is no charge for meals this year, filling out the Free/Reduced application provides other benefits, such as qualifying to have certain extracurricular and athletic fees waived.
Student accounts will not be charged for any breakfast or lunch meals that meet the regular meal criteria set forth by the USDA. A la carte purchases will be charged as usual.
A Message from our Staff
Hungry children cannot learn. That is why Child Nutrition plays a key role in educating all of Lakota's students. We are committed to making sure every student has the proper nutrition so they can learn and achieve to their fullest potential.
Providing nutritious meals to our students is our commitment and we understand that well-nourished children are better equipped to learn. Our goal is to also promote food and nutrition education so that our students understand the key ingredients to make choices that will develop into life-long healthy eating habits.
Our entire Child Nutrition Staff is committed to serving the over 17,000 students on a daily basis with the goal of providing nutritional meals for all students and staff.
With the passage of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, Food Service operations all across the country have had to change their menus to be in compliance. Lakota is no exception.
There are requirements for serving vegetable subgroups: Dark green, red/orange, beans/peas, starchy and other. That is why you may see sweet potatoes, beans or romaine and spinach salad on our menus. There are also calorie minimums or maximums for each grade group so you will see different portion sizes will be served at each grade segment. Whole grains are mandated as well as fat free milk and protein amounts.
