Going Green

Menus

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. All meals, foods and beverages are prepared and served by qualified child nutrition professionals. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

Menu Development

Menus are carefully planned to meet the nutritional needs of growing, thinking, and active students while offering items that students enjoy. A variety of foods are offered to encourage all students to participate in our program. Current regulations recommend that we analyze all menus to ensure that students are receiving the proper nutrition. The totals are then compared to the USDA Recommended Dietary Allowances for students in that particular age group.

Breakfast

Each breakfast meets the requirements set forth by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This means each breakfast meets at least 1/4 of the Recommended Daily Amount for total calories, protein, calcium, iron, and Vitamins A and C, along with other nutrients. It also recommends that no more than 30 percent of an individual's calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.

Lunch

Each lunch also meets the requirements set forth by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This means each lunch meets 1/3 of the Recommended Daily Amount of total calories, protein, calcium, iron, and Vitamins A and C, along with other nutrients. It also recommends that no more than 30 percent of an individual's calories come from fat, and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.

District 55 is a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) district.  As a CEP district, every student in kindergarten through twelfth grade is provided free breakfast and lunch every school day.  For additional information visit Community Eligibility Provision.
