Nutrition Services Substitute Workers
The Kern High School District Nutrition Services Department employs a large pool of Food Service Worker substitutes to cover for regular worker absences, staff shortages, and extra labor when needed at all site locations. All Food Service substitute recruitment and hiring is handled through the Nutrition Services Department, located at 3701 E. Belle Terrace, Suite B, in Bakersfield. Substitute worker positions are flown several times a year. The Human Resources Department will post the available employment opportunities on the district website, for the four geographic areas: 1) Arvin; 2) Kern Valley; 3) Shafter; and 4) All other locations. All applications must be completed and submitted through the online process via the District website, as the vacancies are flown. If your application is selected, you will be scheduled to take a general knowledge test. Upon successful completion of the test, you will be notified and scheduled to complete a Classified Substitute Payroll packet.
A Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint criminal history check is conducted on all candidates, at the District's expense. A pre-placement medical assessment/health screening and verification of Freedom from Tuberculosis is also required and provided at district expense.
No prior food service experience is required to work as a Food Service Worker substitute. It is a rotational, on-call, at will, as-needed position with no guarantee of shift duration or frequency. Usual shifts are approximately 3 hours long, with a salary rate of $13.64 per hour. Successful candidates will also be required to attend an orientation at the Nutrition Services office, and complete online mandatory training before being scheduled to work.
