Welcome to Child Nutrition Services!

School meals are an important educational support for children.  Ensuring all children eat healthy meals each day can significantly lessen hunger and support students’ health and academic accomplishment.  Research has revealed that children who eat breakfast and lunch at school rely on school meals for half of their daily energy intake.  The difficulties resulting from the coronavirus pandemic have made school meals more essential than ever. Research has also indicated that school meals are healthier than meals brought from home because students consume fewer empty calories and eat more fruits, vegetables, and milk.

At Las Virgenes Unified School District, the Child Nutrition team supports student success and learning by providing nutritious meals throughout the school year.  This year, our school nutrition workforce rose to the challenge presented by the Covid-19 pandemic without hesitation.  The nutrition program has remained open with extended meal service hours to provide grab-and-go meals to all children 18 or younger in the community.  As a result, all students continued to have access to healthy food during the time schools were closed.

Good News! The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) extended the free meal program for the 2021-2022 school year.  All students will be able to receive school meals at no cost and without the need to complete an eligibility application.

Child Nutrition Services is committed to providing healthy school meals and snacks to the students of Las Virgenes Unified School District to support academic success and promote healthful eating habits that lead to lifelong positive nutrition practices.

At Child Nutrition, we measure the level of success by the confidence others have in communicating suggestions and concerns. Please feel free to contact Waleska M. Cannon, PhD, MBA, RD, Director of Child Nutrition at [email protected].
