All kids 0-18yrs old Eat FREE until May 2021

In Oct 2020 the waiver by the USDA was extended for school districts to serve FREE meals for all kids 0-18 years old until May 2021.

This would allow All kids 0-18 years old to receive a free breakfast or lunch as an in-person or a remote pick up meal on student contact days, whether they are enrolled in the district or not.

As a district we have decided to proceed with this program to help assist our community in this pandemic and uncertain times. Starting on Sept 22, 2020 all enrolled students will not be charged if they receive a meal; this includes breakfast or lunch.

In District and In Person Students may go through the Breakfast or Lunch lines as normal and not be charged. If they are remote they must request a meal on our district website through the google form.

All NON-DISTRICT kids within the age of 0-18 years old may request for a free lunch only to be picked up. These meals will be available for pick up at the front entrance of Valley High School in Gilcrest, the front entrance of Pete Mirich Elementary in Lasalle and the back-kitchen door at South Valley Middle School in Platteville from 12:30-1:00 pm on all student contact days.

To request a Free grab-and-go lunch please visit our district website no later than 10am, and log into the parent’s tab, click on school meal request and fill out the Google form to request a meal for that day for each of your kids. You must do this daily for the days you would like a lunch. The menu is the same as the in-person students are receiving and will be served hot or cold depending on the item. All items should be reheated to 165 degrees at home.

We ask that you still fill out a free and reduced form for your student during this time, this helps in funding our districts programs and if you qualify your application will be good until September of next year.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of the following kitchen managers through email or phone.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

WHAT MEALS ARE SERVED AT SCHOOL?

The Food Service Department provides Breakfast and Lunch at all district schools as well as partnering with individual schools for special snacks, sack lunches for field trips and other meals as requested.

Research has shown that good nutrition is critical to student achievement and is an integral part of the education process.

ARE SCHOOL MEALS HEALTHY?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child Nutrition Program sets meal patterns and specific nutrient requirements that our Breakfast and lunch menus must meet. Meals are planned with the goal of providing students with 1/3 of their Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for key nutrients and calories at Lunch. In keeping with these requirements our menus are computer analyzed to ensure that they meet the guidelines for calories, fat, sodium and other important nutrients.

WHAT IF MY STUDENT IS STILL HUNGRY AFTER THE MEAL?

Portion quantities are determined by the USDA meal patterns by age/grade groups. Quality of food, not quantity is what builds healthy minds and bodies. All schools utilize the “offer vs. serve” system. Students must select 3 of the 5 food groups and one item MUST be either a ½ cup of fruit OR vegetable. This allows students to choose what they would like to eat.

WHAT IF I WANT TO HAVE LUNCH AT SCHOOL WITH MY CHILD?

Parents are always welcome and encouraged to eat with their students in the school cafeteria. Because we plan for the number of students who sign up with their classroom teacher it’s important to call ahead and reserve a school lunch in order to ensure our staff prepares enough food. See meal Prices and contact information provided below.

WHERE CAN I FIND A FREE OR REDUCED PRICE MEAL APPLICATION?

Applications for free or reduced price meals are available at all schools' main offices and here. All families wishing to be considered or free or reduced price meals must complete a new application each school year. New for 2015-16 families can complete an application online!
