Our Mission
To serve healthy nutritious meals and provide nutrition education to students and staff of C.V.U.S.D. in a clean, safe and friendly environment.
Our Vision
To be recognized in the community and the school district as a professional and efficient organization that strives to improve the overall health of our students and staff though better nutrition awareness.

The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

Nutrition Services Department

The Nutrition Services Department is a part of the Coachella Valley Unified School District where we serve about 125,000 meals a week and are a self supportive entity within the school district, it is a business operation. This means that the only income the department has available in order to fulfill its commitments and pay all expenses, comes from student sales, snack sales, and state and federal reimbursement from qualified free and reduced meals. At the present we operate all elementary schools under Provision II which allows us to feed all K-6 students “Free of Charge”.

The state and federal reimbursement comes from different programs we operate:

National School Lunch Program (NSLP)

Especially Needy Breakfast Program (SNBP)

School Breakfast Program (SBP)

Meal Supplement Program (Snacks)

Child Care Program (CACFP)

It is for this reason that the department also has additional policies, rules and regulations that must be followed in all aspects of the daily operations, creating a culture of continuous training within the department itself. All nutrition employees are constantly trained on all the existing regulations and get updated training on any changes throughout the school year. Some of the regulations followed include the Nutrition Services Department Policy, CVUSD policy, Environmental Health Department, City, County, State, and Federal regulations; some of these are very stringent and complex that need several hours training. All school cafeterias have several employees certified as Food Safety Managers from the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals (NRFSP) that entails an eight hour course and examination giving a five year certificate superseding that of the local health department of only two years. This extensive and continuous training has allowed all the cafeterias within the Coachella Valley USD to achieve scores of 95% and higher in every semi-annual Health Department inspection.
