Welcome to Food and Nutrition Services!

Hello Parents,

We currently offer greatly improved school lunch at all 15 of our school sites and school breakfast at four of our sites including; Penn High, Ridgecrest Intermediate, Miraleste Intermediate and Palos Verdes High.  The menus for breakfast & lunch are posted under the menu section of this website.

All of our foods served have to follow the guidelines for the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 and the addition of Smart Snacks as of July 2014.  These new federal nutrition standards also bring school meals in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans while providing students with the nutrition they need to succeed in school.  The link is below.  http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/governance/legislation/cnr_2010.htm

We have made some great strides over the last year and here are some of the highlights for the Food and Nutrition Department.

  • School Lunch consists of 5 components - the protein(2 meat meat/alternates), the whole grain (2 whole grain bread equivalents), two 1/2 cup servings of fruit, two 1/2 cup servings of vegetables and fluid milk.
  • Food Services continues to seek out food items that have a "Natural, and Clean Food Labels."  We have purchased these products for our elementary and secondary schools - they are healthier than before.
  • We continue to reduce and control the sugar in our foods and reduce the use of "high fructose corn syrup".

  • Food Services introduced a Bio 5 Compartment Tray which is now in place at all sites and has replaced our Styrofoam trays.

  • The majority of our fruits and vegetables are locally grown, the Food Service Department continues to reduce its carbon footprint.
  • Our foods are natural, chemical free and organically grown when possible.
  • The meals are planned with less than 30% calories from fat and less than 10% calories from saturated fat.
  • All items are prepared using low fat cooking methods.
  • Food Service is offering more homemade or made from scratch food items.
  • All Bread (Pizza included) items served are whole grain 51% or more.
  • All Pizza items are made with low fat, lower sodium mozzarella cheese.
  • Vegetarian options are available daily.
  • Fresh salad bars are available at every school site.
  • Fresh vegetables and fruits are offered on our lunch menu each day.
  • Students have the choice of taking 2 servings of fruit and 2 servings of vegetables every day with lunch. They must take one serving.

As we go forward the Food & Nutrition Services Department will continue to do even more to make the meals better for the students in Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District.

If you have issues with the lunch program please feel free to contact us at lunch@pvpusd.k12.ca.us . We look forward to serving and being a part of your students day.
