Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

Rockbridge County Public Schools participates in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.  Virginia schools that participate in the NSLP and SBP are required to meet federal and state guidelines that are set forth in the Annual Agreement to Participate in the School Nutrition Programs between the Virginia Department of Education and the School Food Authority (SFA).
It is important to understand that School Food Authorities agree to operate a non-profit school food service program and use program revenue only for the operation or improvement of the school food service, except that such revenue shall not be used to purchase land or buildings or to construct buildings.  Regulation: 7CFR part 210.14(a).
School food service programs do not receive funding through the general fund of the local school system budget.  All funding for the program comes from local school sales (lunch, breakfast and ala carte food sales), state reimbursement for student meals served and federal reimbursement for student meals served.  Adult meals and ala carte sales are not eligible for state or federal reimbursement.   Revenues pay for all expenditures such as food, non-food supplies, equipment, repair and maintenance of equipment and salaries and benefits for food service employees.
