THE HOME OF THE SPARTAN'S FOOD AND NUTRITION DEPARTMENT

Our goal is to provide students with tastefully nutritious breakfasts and lunches.

Our “Offer to Serve” meals are created from menus based on USDA age appropriate guidelines to ensure nutritional balance and promote healthy lifestyle choices.

USDA Dietary Guidelines.

Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand!

Healthy diets have proven to be linked with better grades and success. Obviously studying is important and leads to better grades for students. However, it has been proven that the food we eat plays a vital role in education. Healthy eating is a priority here at Lima City Schools. We have 9 cafeterias that serve over 3800 students. Each day our cooks focus on nutritious tasteful "Offer versus Serve" lunches. Four to Five times a week students at Freedom Elem., Heritage Elem., Independence Elem., Unity Elem., and South Middle School participate in the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetables program. Students are introduced to and educated on healthy snack choices. Monthly themed teaching lessons focus on introducing students to Fresh Fruits & Vegetables from the growing stages to the many different ways of serving.

The School Food Service department is made up of a team of 54 food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well-being and enhancing their ability to learn. These dedicated food and nutrition employees regularly attend meetings and educational workshops to stay current with USDA recommendations and practices. Such as the one shown below. Twenty Managers and Head cooks attended an In-Service at Rightway/Powell. They took a tour of the facility, did can cutting, worked on meal pricing, and team building.

BREAKFAST IS OUR JUMP START TO LE

/.ARNING! At Lima City Schools we are nationally known for our BIC (Breakfast in the Classroom) program. This allows us to serve breakfast to all students free. We serve as many breakfasts as lunches. With "Offer vs Serve" at Breakfast students are required to take a choice of a fruit or a fruit juice, and they are still required to try 1/2 cup of either a fruit or a vegetable at lunch.
