The Board of Education promotes healthy schools by supporting student wellness, good nutrition and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment. Schools contribute to the basic health status of students by facilitating learning through the support and promotion of good nutrition and physical activity. Improved health optimizes student performance potential, as students who eat well-balanced meals are healthy are more likely to learn in the classroom.
The District will establish and maintain a District-wide School Wellness Council, comprised of students, teachers, administrators, parents, community members and a nutrition/health professional. The purpose of this council shall be to monitor the implementation of this policy, evaluate progress toward policy goals, serve as a resource to schools (e.g. provide lists of healthy incentives, snacks, etc.) and recommend revisions to policy deemed necessary and/or appropriate.
Balance is essential for any Wellness Policy. Key areas include:
- Nutrition Education
- Physical activity
- Other school-based activities that are designed to promote student wellness.
